What is the DiversityWorks Mentorship Program? Because
youth, as a population, are marginalized from society and very often ignored
and/or mistreated, we believe that young people need positive adult allies
in their lives to support them to follow-through with their dreams and
plans for creating change in this world. The DiversityWorks Mentorship
Program is designed to provide additional support to youth participants
that attend The Works. It is a yearlong mentoring commitment that begins
in mid-June. Download the Mentor Job Description here.Who are DiversityWorks mentors? Adult mentors have the capacity to play a pivotal role in the well-rounded growth of young people. Their ability to relate, listen and empathize can create open communication and trust with youth. As the mentees become more comfortable with their mentors, their increased willingness to articulate and address significant matters has the potential to promote a greater sense of perspective, realization and self-awareness regarding the various aspects of their lives. DiversityWorks believes that a young person's identity plays an important function in how s/he develops as an individual. Recognizing and addressing the ethnic and cultural impact of the youth and community on one's life is particularly critical. Are

The Works is a year long program that begins as a six-week summer intensive program for high-school and college-aged youth who are dedicated to community-building, deepening their understanding of power and oppression, and making a difference in their worlds through peer diversity education. Through workshops, service learning and community events, participants will gain a deep understanding of racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, ableism, ageism, and other forms of oppression. Youth will also develop their own skills as leaders and gain tools for bringing about positive change in their communities. As a result of the program, we expect that each and every youth will themselves see the world in a different way and impact hundreds of other young people outside of the program through social justice work that they design and implement throughout the year.
